 How to Choose a Mattress

A mattress is a very personal item that is not easy to choose. There is no mathematic formula to tell you which mattress is right for you. The simplest way to choose the correct mattress is to visit a store and lay down on them. It is a good idea to visit a store that carries multiple brands and feels. In this way you can compare the feel of different brands and get unbiased opinions of each product.

Here are a few basic guidelines to help you choose the correct mattress:

Sizes – All of our manufacturers use the same dimensions for the most common sizes.

Twin 39x75
Full 54x75
Queen 60x80
King 76x80
California King 72x84

Many people have been told all their lives that they need a good, firm bed for their backs. The important thing to realize is that when a doctor recommends a firm bed, they are talking about support. The way mattresses are constructed today, you can purchase a mattress with firm support and a softer surface. In this way the soft tissues of your body can be relieved of pressure, while your spine receives the support it needs. This does not mean that a softer bed is for everyone. It simply means that you do not have to choose a hard mattress because of your bad back.

These are important when you are comparing beds within the same brand.

However, you cannot look at just coil count. Some brands may have half as many coils as another brand, but actually have more steel inside them. Along with coil count you should consider the gauge (thickness) of the wire as well as the number of turns in a coil. In general if you are looking at beds in the same price range they will usually be around the same quality. Don’t become too involved with the mechanics of the bed. The important part is the way it feels to you.

There are a number of alternatives today to the conventional innerspring mattress. A number of companies have started creating alternative bedding products. In general the foam beds are an excellent alternative to the innerspring. They often have longer warranties and many options as to the feel of the bed. Be very careful when selecting one of these beds. If you are looking at a name brand versus a knock-off compare the pricing. If it were possible to make the same quality of bed for incredible different prices, everyone would make them cheaper. Find out what the differences are before making a costly mistake.
